The Catholic Church is making its most formal institutional move yet into artificial intelligence oversight. Pope Francis has given the green light to establish an Interdicasterial Commission on Artificial Intelligence — a cross-departmental body that will coordinate how the Vatican thinks about, responds to, and potentially shapes global conversations around AI ethics and policy.
This isn't the Church's first brush with AI. The Vatican has been quietly building its position on technology ethics for years, most notably through the Rome Call for AI Ethics in 2020, which drew signatures from tech giants including Microsoft and IBM. But a dedicated commission signals something more permanent — an institutional stake in the ground rather than a one-off declaration.
For the AI industry, this development carries more weight than it might appear on the surface. The Vatican commands moral authority over roughly 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide, and its policy positions have historically influenced international regulatory conversations. When an institution of that scale formalizes its AI governance apparatus, it adds another powerful voice to a global debate that's already pulling in governments, NGOs, and civil society groups.
The timing is notable. As the EU AI Act rolls out and the US continues its regulatory push-and-pull, the Vatican's entry into structured AI governance reflects a broader pattern: every major institution on the planet is scrambling to develop an official posture on AI before the technology outpaces their ability to respond meaningfully.
Whether this commission produces actionable frameworks or remains largely symbolic remains to be seen. But dismissing it as irrelevant would be a mistake. Faith-based institutions have long shaped bioethics standards that eventually fed into medical and legal policy. AI ethics could follow a similar trajectory — and having the Vatican at the table, with its own dedicated body, means that conversation just got a new and influential participant.
